Bakalaki

Singapore’s gastronomic scene may be a real melting pot of good food from all corners of the globe, but when it comes to Greek food, there aren’t so many options to choose from. That’s why we were super excited when we heard about Bakalaki, a brand new Greek spot that recently opened in Tiong Bahru.

We checked it out last Wednesday night and it was packed. The buzz in the air was great and really reminded us of being back in New York in some of the busiest hot spots. Do be sure to make a reservation in advance!

Why you should come here:

If you’re a fan of Greek food, then this centrally located taverna is an absolute must. We went on a Wednesday night and the vibe was buzzing inside the contemporary space, which was done up with all-white walls, natural wood and metal imported from Greece, high ceilings, and a very cool diagonally slanting wine wall. The three owners are all Greek, so the menu includes authentic Eastern Mediterranean dishes made with ingredients sourced from Greek suppliers, and pretty much everything we had was ridiculously tasty and fresh.

What we love:

The restaurant was packed and had a good buzz in the air, and we were very impressed with how well the team handled such a crazy busy night, especially seeing as how they had only been open for two weeks at that point.

For a starter we tried the dip platter with four different dips, and it worked out to be a great deal because they only charge $27 for the platter, which is way cheaper than if you order single dips as separate options. Our favourite dip on the platter was the Tyrokafteri, a spicy feta cheese spread with Greek yoghurt and roasted peppers.

We also tried the Keftedes, beef meatballs that came piping hot with mint and lemon, and the grilled Halloumi cheese with lemon and oregano. To be honest, we would probably opt for something other than the Halloumi next time, as it was a little bland.

The Horiatiki Salad was just what we expected for a traditional Greek salad with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives and feta, all drizzled with tasty Bakalaki Extra Virgin Olive Oil. We also had the Seafood Platter, which came with crispy fried squid, prawns and grilled octopus, plus sides of lemon sauce and steamed vegetables.

Overall, the food was fantastic and they also have a huge wine list with many Greek wines at reasonable prices. We’re stoked to have an authentic Greek newcomer in Singapore, and we definitely know there is demand for it!

UJ Tidbit:

We had a great time on our Wednesday evening visit, but they’re also open for lunch from Friday to Sunday, and we can see this being an awesome lunch spot. Be sure to stop by the retail shop on site as well to pick up traditional Greek products to take home.
