Amo

Amo is slowly becoming one of our favourite Italian restaurants. Located on trendy Hongkong Street, it adds to the great variety of restaurants and bars nearby including The Kitchen at Bacchanalia and FOC, which are listed in our Top 50 Restaurants, and Vasco and 28 HongKong Street which are also listed in our picks for Top 50 Bars in Singapore. Although we’ve only been to Amo twice so far, we definitely think you need to know about it because both the atmosphere and the food here are seriously on point.

Why you should come here:

Set in a shophouse from the 1950s, Amo fuses the old and the new with vintage features like original mosaic floor tiles and exposed brick walls, as well as modern touches like comfy cushioned chairs and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs pulling pizzas out of the wood-fired oven. They’ve also got a lovely courtyard outdoors with a huge wall mural painted by local artist Venetia Stevens.

If you’re looking for a place with a good energy to it in a great location where you can hop around after, this is a good bet. Both times we went were on Saturday nights and the place was full, which is always a good sign. Start at the bar and have a drink if you have some time and then move to your seats for a family-style feed of antipasti, pizzas and pastas.

What we love:

The food was excellent and the location on Hong Kong street is a great place to be because you can just hop over to Vasco and 28 HongKong Streetnext door after your meal. Inside it’s buzzy and vibey, but be warned that the acoustics are not the best, so expect to speak loud and strain a bit to hear your dining companions. That being said, overall, it’s a fun dining experience.

We ordered tons from the menu, and the dishes that we would order again include the creamy Burrata with eggplant salad, walnuts and bottarga, the delicate Zucchini Flowers with mortadella, crunchy pistachios and lemon honey, the simple yet super flavourful Margherita DOP pizza with San Marzano tomatoes and fresh basil, the Bone Marrow with wild garlic pesto and anchovy salsa verde, which was decadently heavy and rich, the Linguine with Clams, paprika and cherry tomatoes, which was some of the best vongole we’ve ever had, and the Grilled Seabass with spring vegetables and mint casserole, which serves two.

UJ Tidbit:

It can get a bit pricey here, especially if you’re going for some of the Wood Fired Grills, so be sure to bring along a friend or three so you can share your feast and the bill.

Damage:

Antipasti and pizzas start at $22++, wood-fired mains start at $35++, and side dishes ring in at $12++ for most.
