New Restaurants in Singapore: March 2020

It’s only the beginning of the month, but March is already shaping up to be a fab month for foodies. There are some great new restaurants and cafes in Singapore that recently opened their doors, and we have few of them pegged on our must-visit list. From authentic Italian pizzas to Peranakan classics, conveyor belt sushi and sensational seafood, these are the hottest new places that we think are going to make a huge splash on Singapore’s F&B scene. 

 

Restaurants

The Blue Ginger at Great World City

The Blue Ginger has been serving up Peranakan cuisine at its Tanjong Pagar locale for about 25 years, and now they have a second location at the newly revamped Great World City. Look for the Peranakan tiles out front and the long, narrow space with a huge window at the back. The menu features classic dishes like otak otak fish cakes and beef rendang. In addition you’ll find new offerings like the kerabu kacang botol (a wing bean salad) and the cuttlefish with black nut paste.

Pizza Addiction 

There’s a new pizza joint in town and we think it sounds pretty darn amazing. Pizza Addiction at Goldhill Plaza Mall is the brainchild of Italian-born Marcello Mazzotta, who imports fresh ingredients from Italy to make authentic pizzas, sandwiches and gnocchi. The dough is made fresh in house every day and fermented for 24 hours to get a great rise. Even the sandwiches feature housemade puccia salentina bread, which is cooked on a hot stone.

Torii Izakaya

Named after the huge gates that stand at the entrances to Shinto shrines, Torii Izakaya is a colourful new Japanese spot on Duxton Road. Huge murals of Japanese iconography cover the walls and the inviting wooden tables are great for gathering with groups of friends over beers, sake and tasty bites. The menu is pretty comprehensive with everything from yakitori skewers to Wagyu sliders, steaks, sushi and donburi bowls.

Sushiro 

Japan’s largest conveyor belt sushi chain first opened its doors at Tiong Bahru Plaza, and now they are open at Shaw House at Isetan. This is one of the new restaurants in Singapore that we’re most excited about because they have over 100 options that travel along a 350-metre conveyor belt. Plus the prices a very reasonable, so you’ll be in for a feast of great sushi at great prices. We hear there’s also a third outlet in the works.

Le Fusion

Just like the name suggests, this chic new spot on Mohamed Sultan Road offers dishes that fuse Eastern and Western cooking techniques and flavours. It has a funky modern Asian vibe with bright murals on the walls and hanging red lanterns. For starters try the foie gras with oriental risotto or the lobster salad with masala dressing, then move on to mains like the crispy pork roulade with piquillo yuzu emulsion or the pan-seared salmon with mirin and bearnaise sauce.

Catfish

Chef Andrew Walsh of Cure and Bao Boy is at it again with another new restaurant slated to open this month on Gemmill Lane. Catfish will focus on fresh seafood sourced locally from markets and directly from fishermen. We don’t know much about the space except that attention to detail is going into every single aspect right down to the plates and bowls made by skilled Balinese artisans. With Chef Andrew at the helm, we’re pretty sure Catfish is going to be all sorts of fantastic.

Cicada

Clarke Quay has a swinging new spot to sip cocktails and dig into creative Asian cuisine. The ground floor is done up with white brick walls and lots of greenery and it has a real bistro-style vibe with contemporary dishes like the oriental braised duck leg with five-spice jus. Upstairs there’s a cool jazz lounge where you can groove to live music as you sample libations like the Cicada Sling with gin, brandy, cherry brandy, pineapple syrup, grenadine, Cointreau, bitters, cherry and ginger meringue and lime juice.

Cafes

Alchemist Design Orchard

Alchemist is one of our favourite homegrown coffee chains, so we were happy to hear that they have another location we can hit up at Design Orchard. It’s not super easy to find, but if you do find your way to The Cocoon Space on the third level, you’ll be rewarded with fresh brews made with beans that come straight from their roastery and a very Instagrammable space with nice touches like a terrazzo coffee bar, cool concrete walls, and plenty of greenery outside the windows.
